History
Discover
Delmar...
Delmar has a unique and colorful history. Founded by four farmers,
the town post office bore the name "Brookfield". The
town proved to be an important thoroughway for the railroads.
In 1870, a second railroad was added, intersecting the first
tract. The conductor of the line that reached the intersection
first renamed the town "Delmar" using the first initials
of the six ladies who where passengers on the train.
The Delmar Depot is an important part of our heritage because
the railroad was crucial to Delmar's development. Originally,
the depot was an old train car that was sitting beside the tracks.
In the early 1870's the town built the original depot. The railroad
does not run through Delmar anymore, but the Depot is restored
to it's previous glory. It now serves as a museum for the city
since it's restoration completion. The Depot is on the National
Regrister for Historic Landmarks since May of 1997.
Delmar is a town of approximately 520 residents, nestled in
the rolling hills and farmland on the edge of Clinton and Jackson
Counties. We are seven miles from Maquoketa and eleven miles
from DeWitt. We are a scant 30-minute commute to the Quad Cities,
Clinton and Dubuque.
As a small town, we lack a lot of the noisy and destructive
aspects of city life. We are virtually crime-free and life here
is full of the simple pleasures.
Our elementary school is one of the best in the state, with
all the amentities of city schools, plus the individualized,
one-on-one attention. |
